Film Photography - Voigtlander Bessa R3a

After all these years of creating content professionally I try to ensure I make time to create for the sake of just making things. One of the mediums I love to work with is photography and within that, film photography. In the era of digital cameras, smart phones, and social media it doesn’t make much sense to shoot film photography - you can’t check your pictures to make sure everything is looking the way you want and you have to send the film off to be developed (I don’t develop my own film!) It is a fun to look at the pictures a week later and seeing how they came out though!

Shooting film forces me to slow down and be patient which is a nice change of pace of taking pictures and then feeling the urge to immediately post them in some capacity. By no means am I saying I’m above posting to my Insta story or TikTok, I do that all the time but it’s nice to take pictures with real intentionality because I have a limited number of pictures. Another benefit of shooting on film is that I have to go back to my roots and remember how the process of shooting a photo actually works. I have to take into account the ISO of the film, the aperture of the lens is set at, and how that effects my shutter speed.

I really want to dive deeper into shooting photography and am currently saving for a Leica Q2 which is an expensive and fairly niche camera. While coming to this decision I had considered selling my Voigtlander Bessa R3a film camera and the Nokton 40mm lens along with it. Since I was considering getting rid of the thing I decided to take it on a lake house trip with some friends and shoot a couple rolls of film for old times sake. That might have actually been a mistake! After looking at the photos I am now leaning towards holding onto it.

The Voigtlander Bessa is such a beautiful and solid camera. Even though I don’t shoot with it very often, every time I do I’m reminded of the reason I got into photography and content creation in the first place.
